Who doesn’t love a freebie? Whether it’s half-price pudding, a loyalty freebie, or a cheeky pint, Tonbridge is full of small wins for savvy locals. We’ve scoured the town (and our shopping baskets) to bring you the best ways to save a few pounds — and even score the occasional treat.
1/ Waitrose reduced items
Every evening, the too-good-to-waste stickers come out at Waitrose, and that’s your cue. We’ve bagged everything from half-price steak and fancy cheeses to puddings and even the odd bottle of wine. Artisan sourdough loaves have been spotted for as little as £1.
The timing can be hit-and-miss — sometimes an hour before closing, sometimes earlier — but it’s worth a bit of trial and error for those yellow-label treasures.
2/ Lidl Plus App
The Lidl Plus app is a quiet gem for anyone who shops there regularly.
Spend £10 and you’ll often get a free bakery item — think fresh croissants or pastries. Hit spending milestones and you unlock more freebies, from veg to snacks.
Our favourite hack? When the free vegetable offer appears, it technically covers any veg item — so yes, you can grab a 7kg bag of potatoes for nothing. But we didn’t tell you that!
3/ Free drink at Fuggles after a 5km

If you love running and beer, this one’s for you. Join the Scrambled Legs Run Club, head out for a friendly 5k, and then enjoy a free drink at Fuggles Beer Café afterwards. It’s social, fun, and possibly the most rewarding way to earn your pint.

4/ Park Run

Completely free and full of community spirit. Tonbridge Parkrun takes place every Saturday morning in the park, attracting runners, joggers, and walkers of all abilities. The vibe is always upbeat, and if you’re lucky, you’ll find a few local cafés offering post-run discounts too.
5/ Coffee shop loyalty cards

If you’re a caffeine regular, don’t skip the stamp cards. Verdigris offers a free coffee after ten, and The Market House after nine. It’s a small reward, but there’s something satisfying about that final stamp — and both spots make excellent coffee.
6/ Waitrose Reward Scheme
Waitrose has just revamped its MyWaitrose app. Spend £50 and you’ll get £2 off — not the most exciting deal, but it adds up if you shop there regularly. It’s less “gamified” than Lidl’s app, but still worth having on your phone for those occasional perks.
7/ Charity Shops

Tonbridge has a brilliant collection of charity shops, and they’re goldmines for anyone who loves a bargain. We’ve picked up designer shoes, nearly-new books, and quirky homeware at a fraction of the price. Hit the High Street early for the best finds.

8/ Tonbridge Library
A completely free gem., we love the library. And whilst it’s amazing to pick up proper books, there’s also some fantastic digital perks.
The library’s Libby app gives you access to not just e-books but also free newspapers and glossy magazines — even the pricey ones. You can also access ebooks and audiobooks. Perfect for saving money and decluttering your shelves. Ask in the library for information.
9/ Free events in town

Tonbridge does free community events really well. Keep an eye out for things like the River Walk Festival, Castle music nights, and seasonal markets. We’ll always bring you the latest round-up here on Tonbridge Bean, so you never miss out.
10/ Humphrey Bean beer festivals
The Humphrey Bean (Tonbridge’s local Wetherspoons) hosts regular beer festivals, where prices can dip as low as 99p a pint. It’s cheerful, buzzy, and a great excuse to sample a few unusual brews without spending much.
11/ The Plough at Leigh Quiz night

We stumbled across this one by accident — and it’s become a favourite. The Plough runs a great quiz night, and to top it off, they hand out free snacks at the interval. A proper village-pub evening with a generous touch.
12/ Pizza Express Perks

Pizza Express in Tonbridge has become one of our go-to spots for a cheeky deal. Over the summer, they ran an unlimited pizza offer — and honestly, it was an absolute bargain.
They also regularly offer “Kids Eat Free” promotions during half-term and special birthday treats if you sign up to their mailing list. And let’s not forget the two cocktails for £12 deal — ideal for summer evenings, people-watching from the terrace, or a relaxed drink after work.
13/ Enjoying Nature in Tonbridge

You don’t always need a discount to feel rich in Tonbridge — sometimes, a walk by the river or in the park is all the reward you need.
We love spring when the blossom comes out. Or walking around the park with the autumn foliage around us.
The outdoor gym in the park is also about to get a spruce-up, making it an even better (and completely free) way to get moving.
