By John Lloyd, The Tonbridge Bean
Tonbridge residents popping into their local Wetherspoons, The Humphrey Bean, for a morning brew or a cheap afternoon treat have been met with disappointing news: the chain has been forced to scrap free hot chocolate and mocha refills due to new government legislation targeting sugar consumption.
Signs have appeared at the pub confirming that “Through recent government legislation changes, hot chocolate and mocha are now excluded from the free-refill offer.”
The change is a direct result of government regulations that came into effect on October 1st, aimed at tackling obesity by restricting promotions on high-sugar, high-fat, or high-salt products, including the popular ‘bottomless’ drinks deals.
A Loss for Non-Coffee Drinkers
For many patrons of The Humphrey Bean, the free-refill hot chocolate was a true staple. For a fixed price, typically under £2, customers could enjoy endless cups of coffee, tea, or a warming hot chocolate.
It is a shame that the hot chocolate is no longer available as it provided a sweet, non-coffee option for those who wanted a comforting indulgence without the caffeine hit of a latte.
While the unlimited offer remains in place for tea and all other coffees, those craving a mocha (which contains chocolate) or a pure hot chocolate must now pay the full price for each cup.
The ‘Sugar Loophole’ Debate
The move has sparked frustration among Wetherspoons customers across the country, who have pointed out what they see as a loophole in the new legislation.
While the ready-made hot chocolate and mocha are banned from the free-refill fountain, customers can still take advantage of unlimited refills of tea and coffee, and then add as many sugar sachets as they wish.
The Department of Health and Social Care has defended the rules, stating they are a crucial step in encouraging people not to consume sugary food and drink mindlessly.
For now, patrons of Tonbridge’s Wetherspoons will have to stick to the caffeine offerings or simply buy their delicious hot chocolate at the full, single-cup price.
