The long-awaited redevelopment of Sainsbury’s in Tonbridge took a major step this morning as the store executed its temporary switchover. The original supermarket has closed its doors, and shoppers are now being directed to the refreshed, temporary retail space next door—the former Beales department store site.
This move marks the beginning of the major redevelopment of the original building. Once complete, the two sites will be combined to create a significantly larger, unified Sainsbury’s.
A Modern Arrival and A Longer Walk
The new era is immediately apparent. A sleek, modern Sainsbury’s sign now stands adjacent to the old one, which has been a local fixture for nearly 40 years.

Entering the new temporary section, particularly from the rear of the site, presents a noticeable change to the shopping experience. Shoppers accustomed to the old store’s layout will find their usual rear entrance now leads into a substantial corridor. This new artery transports customers toward the front of the store, adding a bit of extra walking compared to the previous, more direct routes.

Despite it being Christmas shopping season and the temporary store being understandably busy, the former Beales section felt noticeably fresh and contemporary. One initial observation is that the ceilings felt lower than remembered—perhaps an optical illusion or simply a memory trick from the old department store layout.

The Big Picture
While the current, temporary layout may feel a little cramped to some, it is important to remember this is just an interim measure. When the full redevelopment is finished and the two halves are finally combined, the resulting Sainsbury’s is promised to be approximately 70% larger than the original store, offering a huge boost to the town’s grocery provision.
