Following our report in October regarding the confirmed closure list, Claire’s on Tonbridge High Street has now ceased trading.
The unit at 80 High Street, a fixture for teenage accessories and ear piercing for decades, sits empty today. While the closure was expected, the finality of the whitewashed windows marks another significant change for the town centre’s retail mix.
The National Picture: Why Claire’s is Closing
The departure of the Tonbridge store is not an isolated incident but part of a major restructuring of the accessories giant.
Earlier this year, the chain’s US parent company filed for bankruptcy, triggering administration for the UK arm of the business in August 2025. While a rescue deal was struck with investment firm Modella Capital to save 156 stores across the UK and Ireland, a significant portion of the estate was excluded from the sale.
The Tonbridge branch was unfortunately one of the 145 locations identified for permanent closure, alongside five other Kent branches including Maidstone and Canterbury. These stores were unable to be saved during the insolvency process, leading to the redundancies and closures we are seeing this month.
Added to the List of Vacancies
The loss of Claire’s adds another prominent gap to the High Street, a topic we touched upon recently in our piece, “The Big Three: Ranking Tonbridge High Street’s Most Conspicuous Empty Units.“
This closure brings the issue of high street retention back into sharp focus. With the “Sainsbury’s Switch-Up” causing temporary disruption.
What Next for Number 80?
The focus now shifts to who—or what—will fill the void. The unit is in a prime location with high footfall, unlike some of the more peripheral empty units mentioned in our previous reports.
Residents will likely hope to avoid another long-term vacancy or a generic chain replacement. As we noted in our article “Could Tonbridge Become an Accredited UK Nature Town?“, there is a growing local appetite for sustainable and community-focused initiatives, though whether high street rents will allow for such an independent venture remains to be seen.
For now, Tonbridge bids farewell to the purple storefront. We will continue to monitor planning applications for the site and update you as soon as a new tenant is proposed.
