If you’re hunting for the perfect winter walk for twixmas, you won’t find better than this: a crisp Christmas walk from Tonbridge Park to the warm glow of the Leicester Arms in Penshurst. It’s a route that showcases everything our little corner of Kent does best—open skies, riverside strolls, woodlands, lakes…and a cosy pub at the end.

Key details

  • Circular walk
  • Tonbridge to Penshurst and back again
  • 11miles/20km (approx)
  • 2-3 hours each way

Tip – in winter, I’d recommend wellies or hiking boots – the trails can get a little muddy.

From the Playing Fields to Barden Lake

A serene view of Barden Lake featuring a wooden dock, surrounded by autumn foliage and small birds on the water.

Start in Tonbridge Park. Cross the playing fields and head to the small bridge, crossing over so you get to the rugby pitches. Cross or walk around the rugby pitch to the left of the footpath. Go under the railway bridge as though you’re on the parkrun circuit. The path leads into the woods—quiet, sheltered, and usually easy underfoot.

Turn left toward the lake. When you reach the bridge to Barden Lake, cross and walk along the path beside the water. Continue around the top-right of the lake and take the footpath with the river on your right. This stretch is flat and open.

Follow the path through the Friendship Woods, then continue past the Leigh Flood Barrier until you reach Haysden Water. Here it’s best to walk anti-clockwise around the lake (or turn right once you reach the lake.)

Through the Woods to Penshurst

After reaching the edge of Haysden Water, head into the woods and follow the signposts for Penshurst. The woodland paths are clear, and the terrain stays fairly level.

At the end of the woods, you’ll pass a field—often with cattle to the left. Continue until you reach the road. Cross carefully, then go over the bridge. On the left you’ll see a footpath: enter the field and walk with the river on your left (a popular wild swimming spot in summer.) Sometimes there are cattle in this field, so be cautious with dogs. The path leads to a small footbridge in the far-right corner. Cross it and climb the hill.

Turn left at the top and follow the road briefly. Soon there’s another field path. Walk straight ahead and you’ll see Penshurst Place in the distance. Head down the field, through the gate, and into the village.

The Leicester Arms

You’ll come to the Leicester Arms shortly after passing Penshurst Place. It’s a traditional pub with comfortable seating and a relaxed atmosphere. You can sit down for a full meal or simply order a drink and a cheeseboard. It’s a good spot to warm up, rest your legs, and chat before heading back.

The walk is long enough to feel like you’ve earned a rest, but not so demanding that the return journey becomes a chore. On a crisp December day, it’s a simple, enjoyable way to stretch your legs, enjoy familiar local landmarks, and end with something satisfying.
