There’s something wonderfully freeing about swimming out in nature — that first gasp as you slip into cool, fresh water, the sun (hopefully) warming your back, and the unmistakable joy of swimming outdoors. And here in Tonbridge, we’re lucky to be surrounded by some of Kent’s most scenic spots for a summer dip.
If you’re looking to trade the chlorinated pool for something a bit more, well, wild, here are a few of the best places to swim in nature — all within easy reach of Tonbridge.
Haysden Water — Tonbridge (TriSwim Events)
Best for: Organised lake swims close to home
Distance from town: Walkable from Tonbridge centre (20–30 mins)
You can now officially swim at Haysden Water — but only through special TriSwim events. These bookable sessions offer a safe and supportive environment for open-water swimming, with lifeguards on duty and a real community feel. Perfect if you’re new to wild swimming or looking to build confidence.
👉 Booking in advance is essential through TriSwim’s website.
Outside of these events, general swimming at Barden Lake and Haysden Water isn’t permitted — so it’s best to stick to the official sessions for a stress-free swim.
Please note – due to blue green algae, the lake has been closed for swimmers until further notice (July 2025.)
Penshurst Place — Open Water Swim Series
Best for: Swimming with stately views
Distance from Tonbridge: 10 minutes by car
Imagine swimming against the backdrop of a historic manor house and rolling countryside — that’s exactly what you’ll get at Penshurst Place.
Throughout the summer, Penshurst hosts organised open-water swim events (also run by TriSwim), set on their beautiful private lake. It’s an unforgettable way to experience the estate from a totally new perspective.
👉 Pre-booking is essential, and places often fill up quickly!
River Medway at Ensfield Bridge

Best for: Wild river swimming in a beautiful rural setting
Distance from Tonbridge: 10 minutes by car or 20 mins cycle
A local favourite — Ensfield Bridge, between Tonbridge and Penshurst, is where the River Medway flows slowly through the Kent countryside, perfect for a more traditional wild swim. The water here is fairly deep in places, so it’s better for confident swimmers. It’s also a popular spot for picnickers and walkers.
Top tip: Walk or cycle along the Tudor Trail and pack a towel — it’s a lovely way to spend a sunny afternoon.
For the Sea-Lovers: Margate Tidal Pools

Best for: A salty dip and day by the coast
Distance from Tonbridge: Around 1 hour 20 minutes by car
Okay, not quite “wild swimming” in the countryside sense, but worth a mention. If you fancy a sea swim, Margate (one of the coolest towns in Kent these days) has two tidal pools. If you’re not convinced about the merits of these pools, read The Tidal Year by Freya Bromley. A fantastic book depicting the beauty of tidal pools around the UK. And in Kent, we have two of the best – Walpole Bay Tidal Pool and the main Tidal Pool on Margate sands.
Bonus points – there’s now a sauna on the beach that you can take advantage of after your swim.
🌱 Swim Safe, Swim Kind
A few friendly reminders:
- Always check water depth and flow before getting in.
- Book official sessions where possible for added safety.
- Avoid swimming alone.
- Don’t swim after heavy rain (which can affect water quality).
- Be mindful of wildlife and always leave no trace.
Whether you’re easing in for a gentle paddle or diving in for a bracing swim, there’s something special about swimming outdoors. And luckily for us in Tonbridge, some of Kent’s best wild swimming spots are right on our doorstep.
Know another secret spot? We’d love to hear about it. Send us your favourite wild swimming locations, and we might just feature them in our next piece!
