Commuters and residents in Tonbridge should prepare for continued disruption as essential sewer repair works are carried out by Southern Water on the Big Bridge. The work is located between the Medway Wharf Road and Lyons Crescent junctions, directly outside Pizza Express.

Traffic Management and Duration

To facilitate these repairs, temporary traffic lights have been installed, restricting the bridge to a single lane. Consequently, traffic can only flow in one direction at a time, leading to significant tailbacks in both directions along the High Street.

Current projections indicate that these traffic management measures will remain in place until 16th January. However, as with many subterranean repairs, this timeline remains subject to progress on-site.

Impact on the Surrounding Area

The bottleneck is causing major delays during peak hours, with congestion frequently spilling over into surrounding streets. Motorists are advised to expect slower journeys throughout the town centre and should consider alternative routes where possible to avoid the heart of the High Street.

While vehicle travel is restricted, pedestrian access across the bridge remains open. Local bus services are likely to be affected by the queues, so passengers are encouraged to check for service updates before travelling.
