The former Somerhill pub on Pembury Road has been given a striking new lease of life as The Holy Goat, and locals already seem to be embracing it. Connected to the much-loved St John’s Yard in St John’s, Tunbridge Wells, fans of SJY’s famous burgers will be pleased to know the old favourites are firmly on the menu here too.

Calling itself “a friendly neighbourhood pub”, The Holy Goat certainly lives up to the description. On our visit, the atmosphere felt warm, relaxed and distinctly local, with people wandering over from nearby roads including The Drive, Deakin Leas and Priory Road. While this part of Tonbridge already has pubs such as The Drum and The Punch & Judy, there is nothing quite like this nearby, and it is easy to see why residents are loving it.

Don’t be fooled by the small cluster of tables on Pembury Road. Inside and out back there is a sizeable outdoor space, including covered indoor-outdoor seating, pod-style tables and a classic pub garden area. The former pub building has been transformed almost beyond recognition, painted an unapologetic shade of green which somehow works brilliantly against the building’s unusual triangular shape.

Inside, jazzy metro tiles and coordinated décor create a stylish feel that carries right through to the bathrooms. There are no TVs or “footie pub” vibes here, although there is an impressive high-tech virtual darts setup, and the focus is clearly on food, drinks and good company.

Heineken, other lagers and Inches cider are available on tap, while the wine list is refreshingly affordable, with bottles priced at £19.95 and medium glasses at £6. The standout for us, though, was the Sunday burger offer. Burgers are just £10 with fries, an absolute bargain considering they are usually around £17.

All beef burgers come with double patties, and the Dutchmen burger was gloriously messy in all the right ways, packed with cheese and sauce. Thankfully, there are no calorie counts on the menu.

Dog and child friendly, The Holy Goat already feels like a genuine community pub. It is another welcome addition to Tonbridge’s growing food scene alongside newcomers like Pho Vietmanese (not the chain restaurant) and Sapori, and we cannot wait to try the rest.
