A Bold Portrait of Anne Lister
The Oast Theatre in Tonbridge has announced its upcoming production of “Gentleman Jack,” written by Ross McGregor. Scheduled to run from 18th July to 25th July 2026, the play brings to life the remarkable story of Anne Lister, the nineteenth-century Yorkshire heiress whose life challenged the social conventions of her era.
Anne Lister, known by the moniker “Gentleman Jack,” was a member of a minor landowning family who distinguished herself through her entrepreneurial spirit and daring nature. The production is based on Lister’s extensive personal diaries, offering an intimate look at a woman who lived with defiance and ambition.
A Tale of Desire and Defiance
Audiences can expect a performance described as both funny and moving. The play explores the seductive nature of Lister’s life, weaving together themes of personal desire and the courage required to live authentically during the late 1800s. It promises to be a compelling theatrical experience for the local community.
