If there’s one thing that makes a summer evening in Tonbridge feel genuinely special, it’s watching a brilliant live performance under the open sky -with the silhouette of the castle as your backdrop. And this year, there seems to be more outdoor theatre on offer in and around town than ever before.

Pack your picnic, grab a blanket, and read on. Here’s your guide to outdoor theatre in Tonbridge for 2026.

Much Ado About Nothing — Changeling Theatre

Wednesday 5th August 2026 | 6:00pm – 9:00pm Cost: TBC | Book with Changeling Theatre

Changeling Theatre are a professional touring company with a long and much-loved history of staging Shakespeare across South East England — from castles to beaches to football stadiums. And what a way to mark their 25th anniversary of outdoor touring: a glamorous, gothic, unapologetically fun take on Much Ado About Nothing. Bold, sexy and packed with wit, Much Ado is arguably the perfect summer play, and Changeling always deliver it with huge style. As they put it themselves: there ain’t no party like a Shakespeare party.

Illyria Presents: The Pirates of Penzance

Sunday 6th September 2026 | 4:00pm – 9:30pm Cost: TBC | Book with Illyria

Illyria return for a second appearance to close out summer in style with Gilbert and Sullivan’s beloved comic opera. Frederick was born on 29th February in a leap year and is contracted to the Pirate King until his 21st birthday — not his 21st year. Which means, technically, he has until he’s 84. Can the inept Penzance constabulary protect him? Will his sweetheart Mabel wait that long? Packed with hilarious melodrama, sharp satire and glittering wit — including the immortal songs “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major General”, “To Be a Pirate King” and “A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One” — this is the ideal way to wave goodbye to summer.

Note the generous running time: settle in, bring plenty of snacks.

Practical info for all castle shows: Bring your own seating (low-backed chairs or rugs), dress in layers, and arrive early to find a good spot. Picnics are very much encouraged. Performances go ahead in all but the most extreme weather – macs and raincoats are always a sensible idea.
