The future of Tonbridge hinges on decisions being made right now. As highlighted in the campaign leaflet below, the next two weeks will shape the future of our community space at the Angel Centre. This is the definitive, final chance for Tonbridge residents to influence what facilities the centre will provide for the next generation. With the ultimate decision scheduled for 14 July, time is rapidly running out.
Why the Angel Centre Matters
The Angel Centre is far more than just a leisure hub; it is the heartbeat of our town. As shown in image below, it serves as a vital venue where local residents can meet, learn, socialise, and find support. For many local organisations, charities, arts groups, and educational classes, the centre provides indispensable meeting rooms that are used every single week. It is a unique place where friendships are formed, skills are shared, and communities come together.

The core of the current urgency revolves around preserving a dedicated, affordable community space. There are major concerns regarding a proposed reduction in dedicated community meeting rooms. Without enforceable planning conditions to secure long-term, public access, commitments made today may not remain binding for the lifetime of the building.

Where Things Stand
Representatives have been working behind the scenes since March, meeting with TMBC and TMActive to raise formal representations. The situation is moving quickly:
End of June: The council’s officer report and recommendation will be published, providing a clearer indication of how the application is likely to be presented to councillors.
7 July: This is the absolute deadline for public comments to ensure they are considered before the crucial vote.
14 July: The final decision on the future of the Angel Centre will be made by councillors.
How to Submit Your Views Immediately
If you value local community space, you must act today. Do not assume others will speak up for you. Local councillors need to hear directly from residents to understand why dedicated meeting spaces—not just sports facilities—matter for the future of Tonbridge.
You can submit a comment directly on the planning portal at https://www.tmbc.gov.uk/planning
The application reference is 26/00424/DR3.
You are also strongly urged to write directly to your local councillor and Tom Tugendhat MP by 7 July to make your voice heard before the final vote on 14 July. This is our last opportunity to safeguard a space that will serve Tonbridge for generations to come.
