Tonbridge, Kent – The cheers echoed once more through the cozy confines of The Nelson Arms in Tonbridge as the beloved pub clinched the coveted title of “Best Pub in West Kent” for an impressive second year running. This latest accolade from the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) solidifies The Nelson Arms’ reputation as a true jewel in the heart of the community, a testament to its exceptional offerings and the unwavering dedication of its owners, Matthew Rudd and his partner Emma Cole.
Stepping into The Nelson Arms is an experience in itself. The beautifully refurbished side-street local boasts a charming nautical theme, a nod to its namesake. Patrons are greeted by a spacious and comfortable interior, adorned with maritime decorations such as a ship’s wheel, naval brasses, a painting of Nelson, a barometer, and even a ship in a bottle. This unique ambiance creates a welcoming atmosphere that distinguishes it from other establishments.
But beyond the captivating decor, it’s the pub’s commitment to quality and community that truly sets it apart. The Nelson Arms is renowned for its ever-changing and intriguing selection of cask ales, real ciders, and diverse keg beers. Many a connoisseur has praised the range of beer styles and rare brews that frequently grace its taps, complemented by real Kentish ciders. Food, served six days a week, includes popular special Pie nights, Burger nights, and traditional Sunday roasts, catering to varied tastes and making it a genuine dining destination.

Reviews consistently highlight the friendly and efficient service, the cozy atmosphere, and the exceptional quality of the beverages. The pub caters to sports enthusiasts with televisions and a drop-down screen for major sporting events, ensuring there’s always a lively buzz. Beyond the daily fare, The Nelson Arms fosters a vibrant community spirit through its popular quiz nights, sing-alongs, and monthly live music performances. The paved rear area, partially covered and heated, provides a pleasant outdoor space, and the pub’s family and dog-friendly policy makes it a welcoming haven for all.
The journey of The Nelson Arms to its current esteemed status is a story of passion and perseverance. Owners Matthew Rudd and Emma Cole took the reins in 2018, rescuing the pub from potential closure and redevelopment into housing. Both seasoned publicans with a track record of revitalizing establishments (having previously run The Windmill in Sevenoaks Weald, which they saved from closure), Matthew and Emma embarked on a mission to restore The Nelson Arms to its former glory as a thriving community hub. They undertook a complete refurbishment, transforming the interior to create distinct bar areas. Their dedication to quality ales and fostering a strong community presence quickly resonated with locals, and the pub has gone from strength to strength under their stewardship. This latest recognition as West Kent’s Best Pub for the second consecutive year is a clear indication of their success and the lasting impact they’ve had on Tonbridge’s social landscape.
As The Nelson Arms continues its impressive run, one can only wonder what new frontiers Matthew and Emma will conquer next.
