More than 50 community projects across Tonbridge and Malling are reaping the rewards of a significant funding initiative launched by the borough council to celebrate its 50th anniversary. A total of £50,000 has been allocated to 54 local organisations, offering vital support to groups working on the frontlines of community wellbeing, education, environment, and mental health.
The one-off grant scheme, launched earlier this year, was designed to mark five decades since the formation of Tonbridge and Malling Borough. It aimed to empower charities, volunteer-led groups, and parish organisations that are making a tangible difference to people’s lives at a grassroots level.
Empowering Local Change
Recipients range from food banks and mental health support groups to veteran services and environmental projects. Each successful applicant received a grant of up to £1,500 to support initiatives focused on local needs such as health and wellbeing, the cost of living, community safety, skills development, and environmental sustainability.
One such recipient, Babons Cancer Support, was awarded £1,200 to launch a new art and play therapy service for children impacted by cancer. The Tonbridge-based charity was founded in memory of Jean ‘Babon’ Spickernell, who passed away from cancer in 2022.
Co-founder Tracy Spickernell described the funding as transformational:
“This funding is already making a big difference to our small charity, and we are incredibly grateful for the support from TMBC. The grant has enabled us to start providing vital creative therapy for children in families affected by cancer, helping them process what is happening around them and empowering them with life skills to face ongoing challenges with strength and resilience.”
Another recipient, Scotts Project Trust in Hildenborough, which supports adults with learning disabilities, received £1,238 to introduce movement and relaxation classes tailored to the needs of their service users.
Clare Tallent, Scotts Day Services Manager, highlighted the significance of this support:
“We rely on donations and local community fundraising efforts, so this money is vital for us. It has meant that we’ve been able to invest in equipment for new movement and relaxation sessions. They’re already up and running, and we’re seeing the benefits. Everyone’s really enjoying it.”
Wide-Ranging Impact
Grants were awarded to a diverse set of organisations, including:
- Royal British Legion Industries: £1,054 for its Life Works course supporting veterans’ career transitions.
- The Oaks Specialist College: £1,500 for equipment to aid adult learners with special educational needs.
- Community Cycle Works: £1,500 to renovate the Snodland Pump Track.
- Cast A Thought: £1,500 to run “Fish and Chat” sessions promoting mental health through social activities.
- Heart of Kent Hospice, Age UK, and West Kent Mind were also among the many beneficiaries.
In total, the scheme supported projects in areas ranging from digital skills training and environmental conservation to outreach for older adults and support for survivors of domestic abuse.
Community Support at Its Heart
Cllr Des Keers, cabinet member for community services at Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, praised the dedication of local groups:
“We’ve been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm, creativity and dedication shown by the many organisations that applied to this scheme. It has been incredibly inspiring to see just how much fantastic work is being done at grassroots level across Tonbridge and Malling.
“As we mark the borough’s 50th year, we’re proud to be able to support those working hard to improve lives in their local communities.”
The funding not only offered short-term assistance but also built momentum for longer-term sustainability within these groups, enhancing their ability to continue serving residents in need.
More to Come
The council has confirmed that further community grants are expected to be launched in the near future, thanks to funding from the government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund. These future opportunities aim to continue strengthening the borough’s community infrastructure and supporting inclusive local growth.
Celebrating Grassroots Dedication
The anniversary funding scheme serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that relatively small investments can have when placed in the hands of dedicated local organisations. From health and wellbeing to learning, creativity, and community spirit, the £50,000 fund is not just a celebration of Tonbridge and Malling’s past—it’s an investment in its future.
