Wild swimming at Haysden Water in Tonbridge has been suspended until further notice following the discovery of high levels of blue-green algae in the lake. Tests confirmed the presence of the potentially toxic bacteria, prompting the closure of the popular open water swimming venue.

Why the Lake is Closed for swimmers?

Blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, can pose serious health risks to humans and animals. In contact with the skin or if ingested, the toxins released by the algae may cause skin rashes, stomach issues, eye and ear irritation, and even respiratory problems. Given the elevated levels currently detected in the water, organisers have deemed it unsafe to continue any swimming activities at the site.

Where Else Can Wild Swimmers Go?

For those eager to continue wild swimming locally, alternative venues are being made available. TriSwim Coaching is increasing sessions at nearby Chipstead Lake and Penshurst Place to accommodate swimmers affected by the Haysden closure.

In addition, a brand-new venue at Birchden Farm, near Tunbridge Wells, is set to open on Tuesday 30th July, offering more opportunities for open water swimming in the area.

What Happens to Existing Bookings?

Swimmers who had already booked sessions at Haysden will receive a full credit automatically added to their TriSwim accounts. Organisers are encouraging swimmers to rebook at one of the other locations and are working to finalise additional sessions to make up for the shortfall.

Ongoing Monitoring

The situation at Haysden will continue to be monitored, and the lake will only reopen when water quality is confirmed to be safe. In the meantime, swimmers are advised to avoid contact with the water and to check TriSwim’s website or social media for the latest updates.

Dogs in Haysden Water

It would be remiss of me not to mention that elevated levels of blue green algae are extremely harmful to dogs. As always, dog owners should keep dogs away from any water containing blue-green algae.
