There are few things more British than a summer afternoon spent lounging on a picnic blanket, sipping something delicious, listening to a band belt out a surprisingly funky rendition of Happy—all in the shadow of a medieval castle.
Yes, the free Summer Sunday band concerts are back at Tonbridge Castle, and they’re just as delightful as ever. We popped along to the first concert last weekend, and it was the perfect way to ease into July’s gentle rhythm.
Kicking things off in style were the Sevenoaks and Tonbridge Concert Band, who brought with them not just their instruments but an impressive line-up of young, seriously talented musicians. Think less “plinky plonky village fete” and far more jazzy. We’re still humming the Grease medley, which was an unexpected but very welcome bop.

As ever, the events are completely free, running from 14:00 to 16:00 each Sunday (yes, they timed it perfectly for us to scurry home in time for the Wimbledon men’s final). You can bring whatever you fancy—picnic chairs, umbrellas, giant hats, leftover coronation bunting.
We brought a blanket, a very civilised glass of Vermouth on ice (with a slice, naturally), and some picky bits. Dogs? Absolutely. Kids? Of course. A full family affair, with a side of castle.
Speaking of which, it’s lovely to see Tonbridge Castle slowly revealing itself again, as scaffolding starts to disappear following roof repairs. With the castle standing proud, the setting couldn’t be better—majestic, atmospheric, and frankly a lot more photogenic without the hi-vis tape.
Here’s what’s coming up over the next few weeks:
20 July – West Kent Concert Band
27 July – East Grinstead Concert Band
03 August – Invicta Jazz Band
17 August – East Sussex Concert Band
24 August – Roarin’ 20s Band
Whether you fancy a mellow afternoon or a bit of toe-tapping swing, there’s something for everyone. Bring a flask of tea or something stronger, wear your best “oh I just threw this on” linen, and enjoy a truly charming slice of Tonbridge summer.
And if you’re very lucky, someone near you might offer you a scotched egg.
