Last Friday, the long-awaited River Walk Festival made its much-cherished return, lighting up Tonbridge with a wonderfully barmy evening that none of us wanted to miss. Despite gloomy forecasts threatening rain and storms, the weather held firm, gifting us a perfect night by the river to enjoy music, food, and good company.
The atmosphere was buzzing from the start. Parked on a slight wonk at the end of River Walk, the ice cream van was serving up Mr. Whippy cones that quickly became the night’s sweet highlight. Nearby, the 65mm coffee shop stayed open late, tempting visitors with inventive cocktails and hearty burritos—perfect fuel for a night of revelry.

Adding to the charm was a small pop-up bar and the unmistakable scent of freshly made donuts drifting from the donut van. It was impossible not to be drawn in by the wafting aroma!
As the river banks filled up, a DJ kicked off the evening’s soundtrack, spinning tunes that serenaded picnickers lounging on the opposite bank of the river. A few paddle boarders drifted lazily by, adding a serene flow to the festivities.
The musical highlight, however, was Tom Carradine, who delivered a “right good knees up” with a set packed full of classic sing-alongs like She’ll Be Coming ‘Round the Mountain and I am the music man (the pia pia piano one). His lively performance brought everyone together, creating that special communal feeling and a really good laugh.

If you missed the opening night, don’t fret—there’s plenty more to come. The festival runs every Friday along the river until the 1st September, so pack a bottle, grab a blanket, and settle in for some excellent live music under the open sky.
I’m especially excited for The Chillbillies on the 8th August—their ska beats are guaranteed to get you moving! But before then, you can see Jonah’s Wail and Loose Change.
