Tonbridge High Street is set for a sweet and convenient makeover as the popular bakery Bites & Melts is partially rebranding to a Premier Convenience Store. The business, located at 97-101 High Street, is adapting to evolving local shopping habits by dedicating half of its space to a full-service convenience shop while keeping its celebrated cake offerings.
This move marks an interesting hybrid model for the store. While residents will still be able to pick up a slice of Oreo Cake or a celebration cake from a dedicated section, they will also have access to a full range of everyday essentials. The ice cream counter will be retained within the new convenience store layout.
The new Premier store boasts a particularly striking feature for Tonbridge—two separate walk-in refrigerated rooms: one exclusively for soft drinks and a second, arguably unique feature, for beers, ciders and wine. This allows shoppers to step directly into an expansive, temperature-controlled environment, a design more commonly seen in larger retail spaces.

This rebranding and expansion into convenience is reflective of a wider trend in Tonbridge. The High Street has recently seen an influx of similar shops, including the opening of the large Morrisons Daily store. This aligns with national shopping trends, where many consumers are shifting away from a single, large weekly supermarket trip in favour of more frequent, smaller basket-size purchases at local convenience stores.
Understanding the Premier Convenience Store Model
The Premier convenience store operates as a symbol group, which is a type of franchise-like arrangement for independent retailers. Under this model, the local store owner maintains significant autonomy, including full control over their own pricing and operational hours. Critically, the model is designed to be low-cost for the retailer, with no joining, membership, or weekly fees. In return for the branding, store support, and promotional materials, the independent Premier retailer commits to sourcing their stock from the Booker Group, the UK’s largest food wholesaler, which was acquired by Tesco in 2018. This structure allows the local owner to benefit from the bulk purchasing power and supply chain efficiency of a major retail group while retaining their independence and local character.
