Tonbridge High Street is seeing a welcome touch of modernisation with the recent installation of new signage pillars marking the entrances to Angel Walk and The Pavilion.
These smart new pillars are designed to provide shoppers with clear, easy-to-read directories of the businesses located within these covered thoroughfares, making it easier to navigate the town’s centre and discover its full retail offering.
Timely Improvements for Key Town Walkways
While perhaps not the most prominent destinations on Tonbridge’s shopping circuit, both Angel Walk and The Pavilion play an important, functional role for local shoppers. They offer useful covered walkways—a particularly welcome feature during periods of bad weather.
The timing of this upgrade is notable, especially for The Pavilion entrance. The long-standing vacancy left by the closure of Wimpy last year has left this highly visible entrance looking tired. The installation of the new pillar offers a necessary facelift and signals confidence in the area’s future.
Increased Footfall Expected
The decision to invest in this new signage appears to be a proactive move ahead of a significant change in the High Street landscape.
The adjacent Sainsbury’s store is currently undergoing a major expansion and is set to almost double in size when it reopens next year. This dramatic increase in retail space is expected to draw a substantial rise in footfall to the southern end of the High Street, directly benefiting The Pavilion. The new pillars will be crucial for directing this increased flow of traffic to the shops within.
Despite the challenges, the area remains a hub of activity. Finch House, located near The Pavilion, continues to be a massive draw, with its outdoor seating area often full throughout the week, testifying to the sustained popularity of this central spot.

The Tonbridge Bean, recognising the increasingly tired appearance of The Pavilion entrance following the closure of Wimpy, recently floated an idea to help brighten the area. The local publication suggested that with the High Street seeing investment—like the new signage pillars and the impending expansion of Sainsbury’s—the vacant unit could be temporarily utilized to enhance the local atmosphere.
These new signage pillars are a small but important step towards improving the shopping experience and ensuring that all of Tonbridge’s businesses—both on the High Street and tucked away in the arcades—are visible and accessible to shoppers.
