The Tonbridge Philharmonic Society is set to open its 2026 season with a powerful tribute to the musical heritage of the Czech Republic. Scheduled for 21 February at the Chapel of St Augustine, Tonbridge School, the programme features a selection of masterworks from Bohemia and Moravia-Silesia composed during a period of significant regional turbulence.
A celebration of Czech masters
The evening begins with a selection of Antonín Dvořák’s Slavonic Dances. These early works remain some of the composer’s most beloved pieces, capturing the rhythmic vitality and folk spirit of his homeland. Following the opening dances, the orchestra will tackle Leoš Janáček’s monumental Sinfonietta. Known for its expressive power and unique orchestration, the piece requires an expansive brass section of over two dozen players to deliver its fanfares and intricate textures.
Acclaimed soloist to perform Dvořák
The concert concludes with Dvořák’s Cello Concerto in B minor, widely regarded as one of the greatest achievements in the cello repertoire. Joining the orchestra for this performance is Dan Brandon, a brilliant young cellist noted for his technical skill and artistry. The concerto provides a profound end to the evening, blending virtuosic demands with deep melodic beauty.
Event details and ticketing
The performance will commence at 7.30 pm on Saturday, 21 February 2026, within the historic setting of the Chapel of St Augustine at Tonbridge School.
