Mother’s Day doesn’t need to be complicated to be special. Whether you’re planning something big or keeping it simple, it’s really just a chance to spend a bit of proper time together and do something that feels thoughtful. Luckily, Tonbridge and the surrounding area offer plenty of lovely ways to mark the day – from relaxed lunches and gentle walks to theatre trips, gardens and easy seaside escapes.
Start With Something Fun for Everyone
Mother’s Day is about making Mum smile, but it’s also a great chance to do something the whole family can enjoy together. At EM Forster Theatre this month, there’s a family‑friendly performance of The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show on 14th and 15th March – perfect if you’ve got little ones in tow or just want to share a bit of joyful theatre.
And if your Mum loves live theatre beyond the kid‑friendly kind, there’s also Humble Boy playing at Oast Theatre in early March.
Make Lunch a Little Special
After a morning of theatre or a gentle wander, lunch is a beautiful way to slow down and savour the day together. The Never Say Never in Tonbridge is a new spot for lunch – and totally family friendly. Closer to the High Street, Verdigris and Market House are always good spots for lunch. Or Jel’s Cafe, if you prefer something more lowkey.
If you want to make lunch part of a bigger adventure, hopping over to Tunbridge Wells isn’t far at all. Stroll down The Pantiles, grab a coffee, browse boutique shops and find a spot for a nice lunch and good conversation.
Afternoon Tea With a Twist

What isn’t better with bubbles? At Mereworth Wines, their Afternoon Tea with fizz is such a lovely way to indulge – sit in the vineyard atmosphere, sip a glass of something sparkly and nibble on beautifully prepared sandwiches and cakes.
If you’re more drawn to historic elegance, Afternoon Tea at Penshurst Place is a classic choice for Mothering Sunday. Imagine Mum settling in for tea in a grand room, surrounded by centuries‑old walls and lovely gardens.
Quiet Nature Time and Thoughtful Activities
If your Mum is a nature lover, a visit to a National Trust property makes for a gentle, meaningful day out. Ightham Mote is gorgeous this time of year, and they also have a Mother’s Day gift‑making session on 15th March -the kind of thoughtful craft that might just become her favourite souvenir.
Nearby Hever Castle is another brilliant spot – the Tudor rooms feel romantic in their own way, the gardens are waking up with spring colours, and the Anne Boleyn Exhibition is fascinating if your Mum loves history.
If You Feel Adventurous: Coast or Castles
Sometimes the best Mother’s Day idea is the unexpected one. A trip down to the Kent or Sussex coast – whether it’s the pebbles of Whitstable, the charming lanes of Rye or the vintage seaside fun of Hastings.
Lovely Little Extras
Not all Mother’s Days are about big activities- sometimes it’s the little touches that make all the difference. Pop into the Flowersmiths in The Pavilion in Tonbridge and pick out an armful of seasonal blooms; there’s something so joyful about fresh flowers on a spring table. If your plans are more low‑key, cooking something delicious together at home – perhaps using fresh goodies from the Tonbridge Farmers’ Market the weekend before – can feel just as special as heading out.
