Discount retailer to shut doors on June 4th
Signs have appeared in the windows of the Poundland on the High Street, signalling the final weeks for the discount retailer in the town centre. A closing down sale is currently underway, with prices reduced by 30% on some items as the store prepares to clear its remaining stock.
While the news follows recent reports on the Bracketts website that the site was under offer, staff in-store have now confirmed that this is a permanent departure. The branch is scheduled to close for the last time on June 4th, leaving residents just over a fortnight to visit.

A quieter month for the High Street
The timing of the closure coincides with a temporary lull for this specific stretch of the High Street. Directly opposite the shop, The Humphrey Bean Wetherspoons is due to close its doors on 26th May for a substantial six-week refurbishment. With the pub not expected to reopen until 7th July, and Poundland vacating its unit in early June, these two prominent buildings will leave a significant quiet spot in the town centre throughout much of June and early July.
Impact on local shoppers
The loss of a large multinational chain may not prompt the same outcry as an independent business closing, yet Poundland has been a practical resource for the community. In the midst of a cost of living crisis, many have relied on the shop for affordable household essentials and groceries.
Its central location made it a convenient stop for budget-conscious shopping, and its absence will be felt by those looking to keep weekly costs down.

Alternatives for value seekers
Fortunately for those seeking low-cost alternatives, there are still options within reach. Home Bargains, located on the Tonbridge Retail Park off Cannon Lane, remains a primary destination for discounted household goods and groceries. For those looking for budget-conscious clothing, the recently expanded Sainsbury’s flagship store now features a significantly larger Tu Clothing section, providing a more modern environment for essential shopping following its multimillion-pound renovation earlier this year.
Future of the High Street site
The closure brings the future of the building into sharp focus. As the property is already under offer, there is much speculation as to whether the current structure—which holds little architectural merit—will be demolished.
A fresh development on this site could provide a significant boost to the ongoing revitalisation of the High Street. Whether the space is transformed into a larger retail unit or a mixed-use project including housing, a modern replacement would be a welcome change from the current aesthetic.
While the town loses a useful discount outlet, the opportunity for a more attractive and purposeful building could serve Tonbridge well in the long term.
