If you live in Tonbridge, you’ll know it’s the kind of place that quietly does a lot well — especially when it comes to community events. There’s always something going on if you know where to look, whether you’re trying to entertain the kids on a budget, get outside for a bit, or just make the most of what’s already on your doorstep.
Here’s a round-up of some of my favourite free things to do in Tonbridge — a mix of the obvious, the overlooked, and the just plain lovely.
1. Visit Tonbridge Library and Pick Up a Book

It’s an obvious one, but still often overlooked. Tonbridge Library is a brilliant place to while away an hour or two. It’s a great escape from the weather in the winter, with comfortable seating areas. I don’t about you, but I always feel relaxed when I visit.
For children, make it a weekly ritual—bring a special “book bag” and let them choose a fresh batch of stories to take home.
For adults, pick a theme or genre to explore over the coming months. And don’t forget: Kent Libraries offer free audiobooks, magazines and other online resources to members.
2. Find a Lovely Spot to Read
Once you’ve stocked up on reading material, take your book somewhere beautiful. The castle grounds are ideal, especially under the shade of a tree in summer. Barden Lake is another peaceful choice if you want a more nature-filled backdrop.

Personally, I like to just pick a nice shaded spot in the park – it’s nice to relax with the soundtrack of play in the park.
3. Wander the Castle Grounds (With Coffee)

The Castle Grounds are such a special place in Tonbridge, close to the high street but it feels like miles away. It’s a lovely place for a stroll, especially with a takeaway coffee in hand. Bring a flask or pick something up from a local café and take your time.
4. Visit the Farmers’ Market

Held regularly in the town (second Sunday of the month), the Tonbridge Farmers’ Market is free to attend and full of life. Even if you don’t buy anything, it’s a fun way to learn about local produce, chat to stallholders, and get inspired for your next meal.
5. Have a Picnic in the Park or by a Lake

Gather a few bits from home or the market and head to one of Tonbridge’s green spaces. Haysden Country Park and Barden Lake both offer lovely picnic spots, or spread out a blanket in the main park and invite some friends along.
6. Go For a Walk

There are some cracking walks in and around Tonbridge. Walk Tonbridge (a great local resource) lists plenty of routes, from gentle town trails to countryside rambles. Try walking to Haysden Water, Barden Lake, or even out to Penshurst if you fancy stretching your legs a little further.
Looking for dog walks? We also have a guide to our favourites here.
7. Attend a Free Local Event
Tonbridge punches well above its weight for free events. The Food and Drink Festival in May is a favourite, and the Big Bands concerts in the castle grounds run every Sunday afternoon (15:00–17:00) through summer. Don’t miss the River Walk, Tonbridge Pride, or other pop-up community events either.
We always publish free events in our Weekend Edit – you can subscribe to get that straight to your inbox (details below). Or check out our Events Page for updates.
8. Join a Free Running Club
Fancy getting a bit fitter? We are really lucky in Tonbridge to have some great running clubs.
Fordy Runs hosts a free social run every Wednesday evening. Or check out the monthly Fuggles/Scrambled Leggs event—run 5km km and earn yourself a free half pint.
9. Join a Creative Club
There are some brilliant free creative meet-ups in town. Roundel Poetry holds monthly gatherings at the Old Firehouse (just buy a drink if you can), and the Silent Book Club meets at the Nelson Arms—read together, quietly, over a pint or a cuppa.
10. Take Part in Park Run or Junior Park Run

Every Saturday morning, Tonbridge Park Run offers a friendly timed 5k for runners of all levels in the park. For younger kids, Junior Park Run on Sunday mornings in Longmead is a great introduction to fitness and community sport. Full details here.
11. Challenge Someone to Ping Pong
There are outdoor ping pong tables in the park—bring your own bats and ball and enjoy a quick game with a friend, or get the kids involved for a bit of family fun. You never know, you might find a hidden talent.
12. Paddleboarding Adventures on the River Medway

Once you’ve got your kit sorted (board and Paddle UK membership/ licence), the river is your playground. Paddle through Tonbridge and beyond, spotting wildlife and enjoying the quiet of the water—all for free after the initial outlay. You can also join social paddles with Epic Life, these are free for anyone joining with a board.
13. Free Kids’ Activities at the Library
Tonbridge Library also hosts Rhyme Time and other free sessions for babies and toddlers. These are a great way to meet other local parents and introduce your little ones to the joy of stories and songs.
We’ve got a handy guide to the best baby and toddler classes in Tonbridge here. We keep this updated regularly, to include free activities.
14. Catch a Free Concert at EMF Theatre
The EMF Theatre often puts on free music events—check their schedule regularly and you might stumble across an acoustic set or live band performance at no cost.
15. Look Out for One-Off Free Events

Keep an eye on Eventbrite for occasional free happenings. Earlier this year, there was a yoga session in the castle grounds to mark International Yoga Day—just one example of the creative, spontaneous events that pop up locally.
As always, we at the Tonbridge Bean will do the hunting on your behalf and will keep you updated on Free events in Tonbridge.
