Let’s be honest — Tonbridge doesn’t always shout the loudest when it comes to Kent’s ‘must visit’ towns. Sandwiched between its more polished cousin Tunbridge Wells and the buzz of London, it can be easy to overlook.

But here’s the thing: Tonbridge is actually brilliant. Not in a showy, chintzy kind of way — but in a proper, laid-back, real-life sort of way. It’s full of green spaces, good food, community events, and surprisingly scenic walks.

Here’s why we think Tonbridge is 100% worth a visit.

1. The River Walk Festival

Each summer, Tonbridge hosts the River Walk Festival — Friday nights are for live music, food and drink stalls and general summer frolicking. And, the festival is totally free to attend.

2. Castle Events and Big Band Sundays

Tonbridge Castle isn’t just a backdrop — it’s actually a real hub for community events. In summer, Big Band Sundays take over the lawn with live music and a bring-your-own-picnic vibe. It’s relaxed, family-friendly, and totally free. And there are all sorts of other things taking place at the castle throughout the year. A few weeks ago we had even had a yoga event there.

3. Tonbridge Food and Drink Festival

Held on the castle lawn each year during the second May bank holiday, this is a big draw for foodies. You’ll find everything from Kentish cider to handmade bao buns. The event is free to attend.

4. The Park

Tonbridge Park is huge — genuinely one of the best public parks in the South East. Whether you’ve got kids, a dog, or just fancy a long wander, there’s space for everyone. Tennis courts, play areas, football pitches, and loads of greenery to enjoy.

5. Barden Lake & Haysden Water

Two lovely lakes sit just beyond the park. Barden Lake is peaceful, popular with walkers and anglers. Haysden is a bit wilder, home to open water swimming in the summer. And a great place to sit back and relax.

6. Sailing in Haysden

Tonbridge Town Sailing Club might fly under the radar, but it’s a brilliant part of local life. Pop down on a weekend to watch the boats out or join a session yourself if you’re feeling adventurous.

7. Wild Swimming

There are a few tucked-away spots between Tonbridge and Penshurst when you can for wild swimming dips. Alternatively, in summer there are organized open water swims in Haysden Water and at Penshurst Place. Details here.

8. Paddleboarding with SUP with Ana or Epic Life

Fancy standing up on a board and paddling through the town centre? You can! SUP With Ana and Epic Life both run sessions, including beginner-friendly lessons. One of the most unique ways to see Tonbridge.

9. Excellent Coffee

Tonbridge has quietly developed a great little café scene. The Market House is perfect for people-watching, 65mm has the best flat white in town (with lovely river views), and Basil is great for brunch.

10. Cocktails at Verdigris

Verdigris sits right on the river and has a lovely terrace, complete with plants, murals and fancy lighting. Classy but not pretentious — ideal for an evening drink as the sun sets over the water.

11. Great Food (and Yes, Pizza Express Too)

There are loads of good independent places to eat — think no-fuss British food at The Ivy House, Thai at Gaab Kao and a solid curry or two. Or just stick to a riverside Pizza Express if you fancy something familiar.

12. Waitrose

It might seem minor, but honestly, a Waitrose in a small town is always a bonus — especially if you’re grabbing bits for a picnic or a train snack. And, if you turn up before closing you can often grab a bargain.

13. Charity Shop Treasure Hunting

If you like a bit of second-hand shopping, Tonbridge is excellent. The High Street has a surprising number of charity shops, and you can easily spend a couple of hours rummaging for bargains or vintage finds.

14. Country Pubs Nearby

One of Tonbridge’s real perks is that you can walk straight out into the countryside. Try a stroll to The Plough in Leigh, The Carpenters Arms in Hadlow, or The Poacher and Partridge near Tudeley — all decent pubs with good food and beer gardens.

15. Walks Galore

You’ve got access to some cracking long-distance trails. The Wealdway runs right through Tonbridge and the walk to Penshurst is a classic — fields, woods, and a pint at the end.

16. Paws Cat Café

One of only a handful of cat cafés in the UK, Paws is a must if you’re into feline company with your flat white. Booking is essential — it’s a hit with both locals and visitors.

17. The Nelson Arms

An award-winning CAMRA pub, The Nelson Arms serves up local ales, top-notch pies, and a proper pub quiz. It’s everything a pub should be.

18. Tonbridge Park Run

Every Saturday morning, runners of all speeds and ages meet in the park for a friendly 5K. It’s a popular route as it’s fairly flat and goes through the pretty park. It also loops round the lake. And unlike some Park Run routes, it’s just one loop.

19. Tonbridge Castle

Yes, we mentioned events — but the Castle itself is worth a visit too. Tonbridge Castle dates back to the 11th century. Originally a wooden motte-and-bailey structure, it was later rebuilt in stone and became one of the most impressive castles in the south-east.

20. History

Speaking of history, Tonbridge has layers of it. It’s full of little stories — if you fancy exploring it, you can take the “Ghost Town” walk, which has some interesting historical snippets.

21. Farmers’ Market

Held monthly on a Sunday morning, the Tonbridge Farmers’ Market is packed with local produce — fruit and veg, cheeses, meats, bakes, and more. Grab a coffee, browse the stalls, and stock up on treats.

22. The River

At the heart of it all, the river makes Tonbridge. Whether you’re walking, paddle boarding, sitting with a coffee, or just watching the ducks, it gives the town a peaceful charm.

23. Walk Tonbridge Festival

This week-long celebration of walking usually takes place each September and is perfect for exploring Tonbridge’s green spaces and surrounding countryside. There’s a schedule of guided walks — everything from short strolls to longer hikes — plus history walks, themed trails, and social walks with locals. A lovely way to meet people or just get to know the area better. Find the details here.

24. River Trips

In spring and summer, you can hop on a gentle boat trip from the town centre. A relaxed way to enjoy the Medway from a new perspective — ideal for families or anyone who prefers floating to walking. Tonbridge River Trips also host early morning bird watching trips – idyllic.

25. Tonbridge Half Marathon

Usually held in September or October, the Tonbridge Half Marathon is well-supported and a great event whether you’re running or cheering someone on. It’s a proper community day, with a decent atmosphere and scenic countryside routes. You can choose to take part in the 5km, 10km or half marathon distance.
