There are plenty of great ways to enjoy the River Medway in May, but this is one that gives something back as well.
On Sunday 31st May, Tonbridge will be taking part in the nationwide Big Paddle Cleanup, with a local river clean-up and social paddle organised by Epic Life. It is a chance to get out on the water, meet other paddlers, and help protect one of the town’s most important natural spaces.
What is the Big Paddle Clean Up?
The Big Paddle Cleanup is a UK-wide initiative led by Paddle UK, running from 23rd May to 7th June 2026. It brings together paddlers, clubs and communities to remove litter from rivers, canals and waterways.
The impact is real. In 2025 alone:
- Over 4,200 volunteers took part
- More than 2,100 bags of rubbish were collected
- Thousands of plastic bottles, cans and food wrappers were removed from waterways
- Over 8,000 volunteer hours were spent protecting rivers across the UK
It is a simple idea that makes a big difference.
The Tonbridge event: what to expect
Epic Life are hosting a local clean up and social paddle on the River Medway, combining environmental action with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
You will be on the water from 10:00 AM, and all types of craft are welcome. Whether you are on a paddleboard, kayak or canoe, you can take part.
This is not just about collecting litter. It is about enjoying the river, meeting like-minded people and taking pride in keeping Tonbridge’s waterways clean.
Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult, making it a great option for families as well.
Equipment and what to bring
To take part comfortably and safely, you will need:
- Gloves to protect your hands
- Shoes you can get wet in such as trainers or wetsuit boots
- No sandals, crocs or open-toe footwear
- A large towel for changing afterwards
- Sun protection such as sunscreen or a hat
Litter pickers and bins will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own equipment if you prefer.
Paddleboards and cost
- Participation is free if you have your own board
- A limited number of paddleboards are available to hire, so booking ahead is recommended

Epic Life have been running river clean ups for years and regularly take part in the national campaign. Their approach is simple:
