Designed for children aged 8 to 15, these sessions offer a fun and safe introduction to paddleboarding on the River Medway. Outdoor Swim at Tonbridge Lido: Enjoy a refreshing dip at Tonbridge Swimming Pool’s heated outdoor lido. Open throughout the summer, it’s perfect for families looking to cool off and have some fun in the sun. Check the Tonbridge Swimming Pool website for opening times.

Badminton or Five-a-Side at the Angel Centre: Keep the kids active indoors by booking a court at the Angel Centre. Whether it’s badminton or five-a-side football, it’s a great way to burn off some energy on a rainy day or to escape the midday sun.

Ping Pong in the Park – Tonbridge Park ⭐(Free): An underused resource in our opinion! Challenge the family to a game of table tennis at Tonbridge Park. The outdoor tables are free to use—just bring your own bats and balls!

Play Tennis at Tonbridge Courts in the Park: Grab your rackets and head to the tennis courts in Tonbridge Park for a friendly family match. Courts only cost £5.70 when playing with kids. No need to book, just turn up and pay at the hut to play.

Tonbridge Park Playgrounds ⭐(Free): Let the little ones burn off some steam at the fantastic playgrounds in Tonbridge Park. There’s plenty of space to run, climb, and slide.

Clip and Climb Tonbridge: Experience the thrill of climbing at Clip and Climb Tonbridge. With various challenges suitable for different ages and abilities, it’s an adventure not to be missed. Check their website for summer opening hours and any special offers. This year they have a 3 for 2 pass.

Tonbridge Junior Park Run ⭐(Free): Get up bright and early on Sunday mornings for the Tonbridge Junior Park Run, a free 2k event for 4-14 year olds. It’s a great way to stay active and meet new people. Check the Park Run website for details.

Go Elsewhere for Junior Park Run – e.g., Kingdom in Penshurst ⭐(Free): If you fancy a change of scenery, consider a junior park run at another beautiful location like Kingdom in Penshurst.

Hollywood Bowl Tunbridge Wells: Head over to Hollywood Bowl in Tunbridge Wells for a classic family bowling experience – perfect for a competitive afternoon or evening!

Castles, Gardens, and Trails

Step back in time or explore the beauty of nature at these stunning locations.

Big Bands at Tonbridge Castle ⭐(Free): Enjoy live music in a historic setting! Throughout the summer, Tonbridge Castle hosts Big Band evenings, perfect for a relaxed family outing with a picnic. Bands play on Sunday afternoons between 14:00 and 16:00. No need to book, just turn up and enjoy.

Outdoor Theatre at Tonbridge Castle: Immerse yourselves in a captivating performance under the stars. This year there are three events throughout the summer, including Wind and the Willows. Book tickets in advance. You can find full details for the shows here.

Hever Castle, Edenbridge: Hever Castle has SO many events this summer:

  • Knights and Noble Battles: Prepare for a spectacle of strength and skill with live Jousting Tournaments every weekend throughout July and August. Cheer on your favourite knights as they engage in thrilling stunts and sword fights – a truly unforgettable display of medieval prowess.
  • Time-Travelling Adventures: From July 23rd, embark on the interactive “Seas of Time” trail. Young adventurers can join a quest to help fascinating characters from different eras find their way home by solving puzzles and engaging in playful challenges around the castle grounds.
  • Majestic Birds of Prey: Witness the awe-inspiring power and grace of magnificent raptors during falconry displays on select dates in late July. Watch as these incredible birds soar and swoop across the historic backdrop, a truly captivating experience for all ages.
  • A Journey Through History: Over the August Bank Holiday weekend, immerse yourselves in “Hever in History.” This special event brings the past to life with authentic Medieval encampments, thrilling battle re-enactments, opportunities to try on armour, and hands-on historic crafts. Ightham Mote: Explore this stunning medieval moated manor house, gardens, and estate. Pack a picnic and enjoy the beautiful surroundings. This year, they are holding an Alice and Wonderland “summer of play” event from 19 July to the end of August. Full details can be found here.

Trail with a Tale, Tunbridge Wells: From Friday, July 11th to Monday, September 8th, Royal Tunbridge Wells transforms into a vibrant open-air gallery with Demelza’s “Trail with a Tale.” This delightful, family-friendly sculpture trail offers a unique and engaging way to explore the town and discover its familiar landmarks through new artistic eyes.

Kingdom Penshurst Walking Loop and Basil Café ⭐(Free – not inc cafe visit): Enjoy a lovely walking loop at Kingdom Penshurst and treat yourself to some cake and a cuppa at Basil Café.

Visit Canterbury: Explore the historic city of Canterbury, home to the famous Canterbury Cathedral and a wealth of history. An easy ride on the train from Tonbridge. You could even take a river tour.

Head to the Beach: Tonbridge is well-situated for a day trip to the coast. Hastings, Ramsgate, and Camber Sands are all easy to get to and offer different seaside experiences.

The Great Outdoors at Museum of Kent Life: Step back in time and experience rural Kent at the Museum of Kent Life. Enjoy farm animals, historic buildings, and plenty of outdoor space. This summer, they are offering a “Little farmers summer pass“, so you can visit as many of times as you want.

Visit Margate for a Day Out: Explore the vibrant seaside town of Margate, with its sandy beach, Dreamland amusement park, and quirky shops. A great day out to keep adults and children entertained.

Godstone Farm: A fantastic farm park offering animal encounters, indoor and outdoor play areas, and plenty of family fun. This summer, you can buy a “G.O.A.T” pass, allowing unlimited entry. There’s also a “summer of fun” including a foam party and various other events. Details here.

London for the Day: With excellent train links from Tonbridge, a day trip to London is easily achievable for world-class museums, theatre, and attractions.

Bluebell Steam Train: Step aboard a vintage steam train for a nostalgic journey through the beautiful Sussex countryside. Check their website for family-friendly events and special timetables in July and August.
